Midwest League Affiliates

Cooperatively Staffed Teams

Before the league's reorganization under the Midwest League banner before the 1956 season, it was pretty common for a town to field a team without a formal big league affiliation. Since 1956, only the 1964 Quincy Gems have fielded a truly independent team. Seven MWL teams, however, have had cooperative affiliations, and another has featured a substantial loan of players from a team other than its official affiliate.

The 1970 Danville Warriors had Cecil Cooper (.336, 3 HR) and were a decent team. So were the 1979 Wausau Timbers; Mike Jirschele, better remembered as an MWL manager, had his best playing year on this team (.241, 7 HR, 54 RBI). Jim Presley (.245, 12 HR, 52 RBI) played for the Timbers in 1980.

    • This was technically a Montreal farm club, but KC's contribution can't be ignored....

  • 1980 Affiliates: mainly Mariners; help from Indians & other teams
• Clinton Pilots, 1976
  • Affiliates: mainly Tigers and White Sox
• Dubuque Packers, 1974
  • Affiliates: Rangers, Tigers, Reds, Cardinals, & others
• Danville Warriors, 1970
  • Affiliates: at least 9 major league teams contributed players
• Dubuque Royals, 1968
  • Affiliates: Royals, Giants, Astros, Tigers, and at least 7 other teams contributed players. This was technically a Royals farm, but the newly-awarded franchise didn't have enough players under contract to support a full player development system.
