The Silver Hawks have surrendered 532 runs while scoring 496. Their pitching's pretty good, but the hitters need some work.
Outfielder Jamie Sykes is developing very nicely; he's become a complete and very dangerous hitter. He's supported by a few hitters who produce well, but aren't exceptional. Second baseman Carlos Urquiola has no power but has good speed. Catcher Josh McAffee, outfielder John Adams, and third baseman Lance Downing are solid hitters.
The Hawks have some potentially excellent pitchers. Closer Chris Bloomer's been pretty dominant. Andrew Good, the anchor of the starting rotation, shows signs of strength, while long relievers Chris Cervantes and Jason Royer are pitching well in spot starts. Mike Koplove, appearing regularly in short relief, has pitched nearly as well as Bloomer.
June Profile
The Hawks slumped in June, but the D'Backs have retooled the team and changing fortunes are likely. This team's offense is below average, the defense is around average, and the pitching has some potential. This team's not likely to steal bases; when it does run, it's success rate is low.
There's some strength in this lineup, but not enough. Second baseman Carlos Urquiola has a leadoff hitter's skills. Outfielders Jamie Sykes and John Adams are power sources. Catcher Josh McAffee's been contributing. Third baseman Melvin Moye seems quite able.
All of the pitchers are decent, but only closer Chris Bloomer is a proven talent. Several bullpen members are potentially fine pitchers; watch Mike Koplove and Michael McCutcheon, especially.

The Silver Hawks are a thoroughly average team, as their won/lost record shows. The team has some good players, but no strong stars. The defense has improved somewhat, but is still poor.
The best hitters on this team are not normally in the starting lineup: Catcher Josh McAffee is a well-rounded hitter, while third baseman Melvin Moye is a free-swinging slugger. The regulars' best hitter is outfielder John Adams, who's a good ballplayer; the usual starting lineup has a couple weak spots, has no stars, but is generally strong.
The pitching staff is similar: Closer Chris Bloomer's the staff's best, and long reliever Jason Jensen's been effective. The starting rotation's OK, but not strong. The best starter's Andrew Good, who's pitching fairly well but isn't an overwhelming talent.

Mike Brumley managed the D-Backs' Arizona Rookie League team last summer, and the Rio Grand Valley nine in the independent Texas-Louisiana League before that. He seems not to like sacrifice hits or intentional walks, and his starting pitchers never finish games. But he likes watching the guys run the bases.
